ABOUT ME

Welcome to Mama Kims Animal Rescue!

Hi, I’m Mama Kim. For over twenty years, I’ve been passionate about getting as many animals off the street as possible.

While I have always been very involved in rescuing animals, my love for them took on a whole new level in 2018 when I traveled to Cairo, Egypt.

If you didn’t already know, Egypt has over 45 million street cats and dogs, yet ZERO Animal Control!

I was driving towards the Citadel, and we passed a garbage dump with hoards of street cats and dogs looking for food. I was heartbroken, but when I noticed an injured kitten at the edge of the dump, I asked the tour guide to pull over. I had to help.

So I started looking for somewhere to take it, but finding an animal rescue in Cairo took me forever!

The guide kept asking me to get back in the car—numb to the scene he probably drives by every single day—but I needed to help. So I stood there, with a spotty phone connection, trying to find any animal rescue in Cairo where I could take the kitten.

At that moment, I decided I could make a difference by helping to provide essential information and promote animal rescues around the world – and ‘Mama Kim’s Rescue Travel was born!

You can expect to find a few things on my site.

Animal Rescues Around the World

That situation back in Cairo showed me that there is a huge need for a one-stop resource where people can go to find animal rescues around the world.

Most countries don’t have a government-run animal control agency, and the promotion of these international animal rescues is subpar (if it exists at all).

Some rescues have very little more than an inactive Facebook account, so it can be extremely challenging to find a nearby rescue if you stumble upon a stray animal in need.

So, over the past few years, I’ve been researching and creating a massive library of animal rescues right here on Mama Kim’s Rescue Travel.

Now, I feature over 400 animal rescues and continue to add more as I discover them. If you know of a rescue doing great work, please let me know, and I’ll be sure to include them.

I want to encourage people to feed street animals, find homes for the ones in need, and visit or financially support animal rescues while they travel.

Places to Visit/Volunteer with Animals

I love to travel, particularly to historically rich destinations, and I even have a separate website dedicated to history travel.

But when I travel, I love to visit places where I can see and admire animals, especially when I know their caretakers truly love the animals and practice ethical care.

So, you can read about some of the best animal rescue and sanctuaries around the world that you can visit as a guest. I’ve been to panda sanctuaries in China, sea turtle hospitals in Florida, Koala sanctuaries in Australia, and more.

I also discuss some more ‘informal’ places to see animals while traveling, like hiking to watch Elephant Seals in San Simeon, California.

Amazing Animal Facts

Did you know that male Elephant Seals reach 9,000 pounds? Or that dolphins – unlike whales – have a special place in their brain that keeps them from getting hit by boats?

I love learning new facts and interesting things about animals, so I include a lot on this blog.

Not only will these improve your trivia score, but more importantly, they will help you appreciate how amazing animals are!

I’ve pulled together the most interesting animal facts for many different species, and I publish all those lists here!

Some of the most fascinating lists are:

Mother and Baby Dolphins in the Pool
Mother and little Black and White Panda Snuggling to each other
Black Rhino and Baby
