1) Dogs are Mammals
Dogs are mammals which means they have hair or fur, are warm-blooded, have lungs that breathe air, and a complex brain. And they give birth to live young and nurse them.
Dogs are related to foxes, jackals, and gray wolves.

2) There are 200-400 Dog Breeds
How many dog breeds there are depends on who you ask. The World Dog Federation recognizes 406 dog breeds. However, the American Kennel Club only recognizes 200. Each breed – from the tiny Pomeranians to the giant Saint Bernard – has their own unique characteristics, appearance, and behavior.
All dogs are considered the same species. Which means that every dog – even different breeds – are able to mate and produce offspring.
3) Dogs are “Man’s Best Friend”
Dogs have been cherished companions for humans for thousands of years. Evidence of their domestication dates back over 15,000 years, making them one of the oldest domesticated animal species.
Throughout history, dogs have played diverse roles, from hunting partners and protectors to beloved family members.

4) Dogs love to Play Fetch
All dog owners know how much their furry friends love to play fetch. It’s not just good exercise. It is a way to use their instinctual behavior in a positive way.
Dogs inherited the instinct to fetch from their relatives the wolf. After a wolf catches prey, they carry it to their families in their mouth.

5) Dogs Pant to Cool Off
Dogs pant to keep themselves cool because they can’t sweat like humans do. Humans have extensive sweat glands and sweat through their skin. In contrast, dogs only have sweat glands in their paw pads. Which means that they only sweat through their paws; which isn’t enough.
Panting allows a dog to rapidly inhale, humidify, then exhale the air, which increases the evaporation of water from its nose and lungs.

6) Dogs Live to 10-13 Years Old
Dogs live 10-13 years, depending on breed, size, genetics, and overall care. (Smaller dog breeds usually live longer). That’s age 60-74 in “dog years“.
According to the American Kennel Club, the first year of a medium-sized dog’s life is equal to 14 huma years. The second year of a dog’s life equals 9 years for a human. And after that, each human year is equal to 5 years for a dog.

7) The Oldest Dog in the world was 31!
The oldest dog in the world lived to an incredible 31 years old!!! Bobi was a male purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo who was born in May 1992 and passed away on October 21. 2023. He spent his entire life with his loving owner Leonel Costa and family in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros.
In February 2023 the Guiness Book of World Records proclaimed that Bobi was both the world’s oldest dog living and oldest dog ever. Sadly, Bobi passed away on October 21, 2023 at the age of 31 years and 165 days old. Check out the below video of this beautiful soul!
8) A Female Dog can get Pregnant Twice a Year
Most female dogs go into heat (estrus) twice a year. (Small dogs might go into heat 3 times a year. And large dogs may only go into heat once a year).
Estrus lasts 3 weeks. A dog can become pregnant the entire time, but there is a small window when they are the most fertile.

9) Spay/Neuter your Dog!!!
There is a huge dog overpopulation problem in the world, including in the U.S.
A female dog can get pregnant twice a year starting from 6 months old. If all of her puppies were to breed, there would be 21,000 more dogs in just 7 years!!!
In addition, there are health benefits to sterilization. Neutering prevents the risk of testicular cancer in males and uterus infections and cancers in females.

10) Dogs have 1-12 Puppies per Litter
Dogs can have up to 12 puppies a litter! (Can you imagine that labor?) The average is 5-6. A Neapolitan mastiff named Tia holds the Guinnes World Record for largest litter. In 2004 she gave birth to an amazing 24 pups!

11) Dogs Communicate with different Sounds
Dogs use a wide range of sounds to communicate. From joyful barks and friendly howls to fierce growls and sad whines, dogs use vocal cues to convey their emotions and needs. These diverse vocalizations allow them to interact with humans and other dogs effectively.

12) Dogs have Unique Nose Prints
Every dog has a unique nose pattern. (So do cats). Just like a human fingerprint, it can be used for identification. There is an app that scans your dog’s nose print and puts it in a database! Although I think I will stick with microchipping.

13) Dogs have an Exceptional Sense of Smell
Dogs are able to detect scents at astonishingly low concentrations. Their sense of smell is an amazing one million times better than humans! (Which explains why they are always smelling things).
As a result, dogs are used for search and rescue, tracking, and medical detection. It’s no wonder they are called the “world’s best nose.”

14) Dogs have Pack Mentality
Dogs have “pack mentality” which means that one dog is the dominant alpha and the rest are submissive. (Which is not surprising considering that they are the descendants of wolves).
If there is more than one dog in a household, the alpha dog will get the best spot on the couch, hoard the dog toys, etc. In addition, dogs view their human family as their pack. Which is why they respond to human leadership and guidance.

15) Dogs have 42 Teeth
Dogs have 42 teeth, including incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. (In contrast, humans only have 32). They have 4 sharp canine teeth that look like fangs to cut their food.
A dog’s teeth are not just for chewing their favorite treats or gnawing on toys. They are also a window into their age and overall health.

16) Dogs can See Colors
While dogs can see colors. they are red-green color blind. Which means that they see the world in shades of blue, yellow, and gray.
While humans might see the world in more colors, dog eyes have other advantages. They are more are more sensitive to motion, and better adapted to seeing in low-light conditions.

17) Dogs have Three Eyelids
Like humans, dogs have both an upper and lower eyelid. However, they also have a nictitating membrane or third eyelid: It’s purpose is to keep their eyes moist and protected.
Sometimes dogs display their third eye when they are sleeping. This is a protective measure to make it look like they are awake.
