Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire offers a sheltered, protected life for sick, injured, and orphaned donkeys of Bonaire. The sanctuary provides them with food, drinking water, medical care, and care for their physical and emotional needs. They promote responsible donkey care and raise awareness about preserving donkey populations.

Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire: How to Visit

Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is open to visitors daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is possible until 4:00pm. The sanctuary allows walking and driving around by car, golf cart, scooter, or bicycle. The animals will be happy to come up to you and stick their snouts through the car window, hoping you brought them a treat.

Tickets can be purchased from the sanctuary. If desired, you can buy a bucket of grass pallets to feed the donkeys. Adopters receive free admission for 4 people from their own family.

The sanctuary has a special care meadow where you can only enter on foot. Here you will find mothers with their foals, orphaned foals, and donkeys that need extra care. Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire also has a garden where you can admire iguanas, tortoises, and flamingos. Also, you can order a drink and take a seat on their cozy terrace.

Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire: What They Do

When reports of wild donkeys in need reach the sanctuary, dedicated volunteers come into action to help the animal. Sick and injured animals find refuge in the shelter, where a veterinarian is called in if necessary. Motherless foals are tenderly bottle-fed, while all stallions arriving at the sanctuary are neutered to prevent an overpopulation of donkeys.

Once these animals recover, they are given a nurturing environment and a lifelong loving home at Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire. The sanctuary currently houses more than 800 donkeys. Check out the amazing experience of volunteers at the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire.

Fostering Understanding and Knowledge

Beyond rescue and care, education is a central pillar of Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire’s mission. In collaboration with Stinapa, they have been engaged in a nature education program for over two decades. This program conducts lessons in schools using a learning box that focuses on donkeys and their significance to the island’s ecosystem.

Students receive four lessons about donkeys in school, with the final lesson held at the sanctuary, akin to a field trip. During this visit, children have the opportunity to meet not only the donkeys but also other island fauna, including tortoises, iguanas, and flamingos. This immersive experience aims to enhance awareness and knowledge about Bonaire’s donkeys, fostering empathy and understanding among the island’s future generations.

Adoption

You can adopt a donkey, becoming their sponsor and ensuring they receive the care they need. Adoption packages often include updates and photos of your adopted donkey. You will receive an adoption certificate and a picture of your donkey. Also, you’ll get a welcome gift as a participant in their Donkey Adoption Program ‘LOV’ IAAAAAA ‘. The adoption fee is 175 dollars for one year.

Volunteer or Internship

For those who can spare their time and skills, the sanctuary offers volunteer and internship opportunities. This hands-on experience lets you actively contribute to the daily care and rehabilitation of the donkeys. Volunteers and internees will have free accommodation in the middle of our donkey park.
