Key Takeaways

* You need to purchase Tickets in advance. You can NOT purchase tickets at the box office. It is a “timed entry system” meaning you have to choose your entry time at the time of purchase. There is a one hour grace system.

* Both the Dolphin and Sea Lion shows are free. However, you have to make a reservation the day of your visit. Seating is limited, so make your reservation as soon as possible.

* Guests can pay extra for an animal encounter. I recommend the Behind the Seas Tour, so you can get an up close look at the Whale Sharks and Beluga Whales

Why Should You Visit Georgia Aquarium?

Since its opening in 2005, over 42 million people have visited the Georgia Aquarium. It is one of the most fun – and well known – things to do in Atlanta.

Guests get to watch sharks, whales, dolphins, mantras, and more swim in giant tanks It’s like getting a rare chance to see what it looks like under the ocean.  Another highlight is watching sea otters zip around their tank on their backs at feeding time.

But the main attraction at Georgia Aquarium are the giant Whale Sharks. The largest fish in the ocean, they are as big as a bus. Georgia Aquarium is one of only five aquariums in the world (and the only aquarium in the U.S.) that has them. I paid extra for the Behind the Seas Tour so I could see the giant creatures up close.

Animals at Georgia Aquarium

Over 1,00,000 animals from 500 species call the Georgia Aquarium home. They live in 9 amazing exhibits. To learn more about each animal species, check out the Georgia Aquarium Animal Guide.

The whales, sharks, dolphins, and sea lions draw the biggest crowds. The sea otters and penguins – which are located in the same exhibit – are also really popular.

For those of you fish lovers, there are 152 types of fish! (I didn’t know there were that many fish species!) And for you reptile lovers, there are Alligators, Turtles, Tortoises, Snakes, and Lizards.
