National Grants Program

In 2021, WIRES began a five-year National Grants Program where $5 million is allocated, up to $1 million per annum, to support wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and recovery across Australia. In 2020, in the aftermath of the Black Summer fires, WIRES ran two national Emergency Relief Grant Programs.

These projects supported 223 carers and groups across Australia. Also, 1 million was dedicated to providing emergency assistance to veterinary clinics treating wildlife.

Water for Wildlife

WIRES, Reece, Wildsip, WWF Australia, PaddlePop, and the University of Sydney have partnered on a national project to provide long-term support to wildlife by supplementing water via arboreal drinkers. 800 drinkers are being provided free of charge to recipients in fire and drought-affected areas.

National Wildlife Research Project

WIRES is supporting the Koala Health Hub (KHH) a University of Sydney initiative to support koala care, management, and research. They have provided a 3-year grant to sustain the KHH and allow it to respond to the increasing need for koala care and management. WIRES funding will be used to help KHH to provide diagnostic support, expertise and coordination, and rehabilitation.

Great Eastern Ranges Partnership

WIRES, in partnership with the Great Eastern Ranges (GER), is taking a collaborative approach to support the post-fire recovery of wildlife across southeast Australia through a suite of recovery and resilience-building activities. By restoring and reconnecting habitats and building local capacity and knowledge, the project will aid post-fire recovery of wildlife and their habitats.

Community Mange Treatment Program

WIRES creates awareness within the community about mange that affects wombats’ eyesight and hearing. Mange is the biggest threat to wombats in NSW and is present in almost 90% of local populations. WIRES provides resources and guidance to the community on how to safely and effectively treat mange in affected wombats.

By joining WIRES Community Mange Treatment Program, you can treat mange-affected wombats in your local area. WIRES’ short online course will teach you how to diagnose and treat mange using two different methods.
