CUPA’ Was Founded in 1991

CUPA was founded in 1991 by an Englishwoman named Crystal Rogers. As hard as it is to fathom, it was the FIRST ANIMAL SHELTER in the region! Roger’s goal was to take in suffering animals and provide a safe space for healing and happiness.

With help from animal lovers, supporters, volunteers, and donors, CUPA has grown from one bedroom in Crystal’s house to a network of multiple centers across the city.

CUPA Has Rescued Over 12,000 Animals

Since its founding in 1991, CUPA has provided medical care to 12,689 animals and adopted out 654 animals. They currently have 623 animal friends in their care.

CUPA works to discourage animal cruelty such as long-term chaining, confining pets in small cages, animals living in filthy conditions, pet neglect, unreasonable breeding of female dogs, and keeping pets in open spaces without shade.

CUPA Trauma and Rescue Center

CUPA’s Trauma and Rescue Center handles complaints regarding cases of stray dogs and large animals requiring emergency medical aid. The center stands at the forefront of CUPA’s promise to care for sick and injured animals across Bangalore.

Located behind the Veterinary College building in Hebbal, the facility has two animal ambulances and a team of skilled veterinarians and experienced animal handlers.

CUPA Animal Birth Control for Dogs

CUPA sterilizes and vaccinates 1,300 *stray* dogs every year. (Note that owners who want to sterilize their pets have to take them to CUPA’s RT Nagar Clinic). They focus on areas on the outskirts of Bangalore not covered by the government ABC program.

And on community dogs cared for by citizens who cannot incur a high cost. The dog will be picked up, given the surgery and 3 day post operation recovery, vaccinated and dropped off for the nominal fee of RS 2000 ($27 U.S. dollars)!!!

Animal Birth Control for Cats

Sadly, there is no government ABC program for cats in the Bangalore area. As a result, there has been a steep result in the cat population. This has led to widespread disease and suffering among the cats.

Scarcity of food has led to vicious territorial disputes. And wailing during mating season causes disturbances at night. To deal with this issue, CUPA has initiated first ever T.N.R program. It is the city’s largest community-driven sterilization program.

CUPA Large Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre

CUPA’s Large Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre is located on 2 acres in Kengeri New Town. The center opened in 2012 to rescue and rehabilitate large working animals. Over 60 cows, bulls, buffaloes, donkeys, horses, and goats call the center home.

Sadly, all of the animals ended up at the center for the same reason – they could no longer provide an economic benefit to their owners. Injured horses or cows that can no longer produce milk are seen as burdens and are abandoned.

CUPA Second Chance Adoption Center

In 2018 CUPA opened the Second Chance Adoption Center on a two-acre property in Dommasandra. The 100 plus dogs at the center were abandoned or abused by their owners, or were rescued or discarded from breeders.

The center provides abundant space, care, socialization, and rehabilitation. The staff are trained to provide compassionate care, socialization, and training for dogs with a difficult past, trust issues, or behavioral problems.

A rigorous adoption process ensures that dogs will only be adopted out to safe, appropriate forever homes. Adopters are asked to make several visits to the center to spend time with the animal to confirm that they are compatible. Then after the adoption, Second Chance receives updates from the adopter to ensure that the adoption was successful.

Adopt a Dog or Cat

Compassion Unlimited Plus Action considers adopting a pet the same as welcoming a new family member. Therefore, it is a major commitment with financial, physical, and emotional implications which last for the entirety of the pet’s life. If you are fully prepared to take on the responsibility and commitment of adopting an animal, please complete the CUPA Adoption Form.

Passive Adoption

Animal lovers who can’t bring animals home due to allergies, a demanding job, a lack of space, should consider passive adoption. In this arrangement, you can choose an animal to sponsor and CUPA will care for them.

With your passive adoption, CUPA will have the funds to walk, feed, medicate, and otherwise care for your furry friend. And of course, you can always come by to spend time with your adopted friend. Check out these beautiful animals available for passive adoption.

CUPA Geriatric Center

CUPA’s Mylapannahalli Geriatric Center is a sanctuary and permanent abode for elderly canines. The dog residents are elderly, chronically ill, or partially recovered from a serious injury or illness. They cannot be released back to their neighborhoods because they do not have the means to fend for themselves.

The one-acre plot features a fenced and roofed area for the dogs to stay during the night or inclement weather. With the care and safety provided by the center, these dogs can live a quiet, peaceful life playing, relaxing, and sunbathing. There is even a shallow swimming pool for the dogs to cool off in the summer, and to provide hydrotherapy for the dogs that need it.
