People for Animals, or PFA, is India’s largest animal welfare organization. They have a strong nationwide network that includes 26 hospitals, 165 units, 60 mobile units, and 2.5 lakh members.

They undertake rescue efforts to save ownerless animals suffering from illnesses, injuries, and other conditions. They rehabilitate ailing animals and find them new homes. PFA also sets up shelters for needy animals and has many other facilities that aid in the rescue, treatment, and recovery of the animals. They are strong advocates against animal cruelty and have taken numerous steps to stop the ill-treatment of animals.

People for Animals Mission

People for Animals (PFA) wants society to understand that animal welfare is not just about feeding, rescuing, or treating animals; it is about humanity as a whole. It affects our planet’s living conditions, environment, children, and everything related to us.

As the Chairperson of PFA, Smt. Maneka Gandhi has said, “Humans cannot exist without animals. Yet we create a world in which they are abused and misused. Let us recognize the partnership between us and further it for the good of all animals – both on two legs and four.”

Cruelty to animals defies humanity. It has a very deteriorating and irreversible impact on the environment, the natural cycles, and indirectly on our health and economy. With so much already accomplished, there is still so much more that can be done. PFA has set loftier goals. They envision an animal welfare center in each of India’s 600 districts.

PFA Achievements

PFA has directly or indirectly touched the lives of many; however, their hard work and dedication are not as publicized as much as they should be. Some of their amazing achievements include:

– A complete ban on cattle transport by rail.

– Stringent reforms in the use of animals in laboratories. PFA members are on the board of each Lab Ethics Committee.

– A complete ban on bullock cart races.

– Regulations on racecourses against whipping horses.

– Halt on the initiation of ostrich slaughtering.

– Improved maintenance standards of the beach horses in Chennai.

– Provision of food, medicines, and other necessities for animals affected by natural disasters.

People for Animals: Current Campaigns

PFA is continuously working to improve the lives of animals. They are on the alert for any human practice that may be harming animals. When they discover such activity, they take strong measures to eliminate the acts and practices entirely. As previously stated, several of their initiatives and petitions have been fruitful. They are also actively working on a few other campaigns, including:

PFA Units

PFA units are run independently by like-minded individuals. They receive no assistance from the government or others. The units are registered independently and operate autonomously. Donations from kind-hearted people who strongly oppose animal cruelty are the only source of help.

Start a PFA Unit

If you are passionate about animals and want to make a difference, you can establish your own unit. To start a unit, you must first be a member of PFA. You will also require a board of six members, each registered as a member of PFA. You will also need to complete many other formalities.

Animal Birth Control (ABC) Program

Municipal authorities in India were engaged in several cruel practices that included killing street dogs. The founder of PFA worked extensively and filed petitions to abolish the inhumane act. PFA also recommended the implementation of the ABC program formulated by WHO.

The ABC program is the solution to stray animal overpopulation. Even the government of India has forbidden the killing of stray dogs. The court addressed the cruelty and declared unequivocally that homeless animals are not encroachers and should not be labeled as such. The court further urged residents, as well as municipalities, to be compassionate toward these animals.
