How Sea Lions Came to San Francisco’s Pier 39

The story of how the sea lions arrived at Pier 39 is one of the most fascinating wildlife events in San Francisco’s history. The docks weren’t built for them; they claimed the space for themselves!

The 1989 Arrival

Shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989, a few California sea lions began “hauling out” on Pier 39’s K-Dock. Before this, they mostly congregated on Seal Rocks near Ocean Beach.

By January 1990, the numbers had grown significantly. The boat owners at K-Dock were initially frustrated by the noise, the smell, and the sheer weight of the animals sinking the wooden docks. However, after consulting with the Marine Mammal Center, the marina decided to relocate the boats and give the docks entirely to the sea lions.

Why Do the Sea Lions Stay at Pier 39?

The sea lions chose K-Dock for several excellent reasons. The protected environment of the marina keeps them safe from their natural predators, such as Great White Sharks and Orcas, which rarely enter the San Francisco Bay.

Additionally, the bay provides a plentiful food source, particularly a rich supply of herring. The wooden docks also offer the perfect spot to haul out and warm up in the sun between feeding sessions.

When is the Best Time to See the Pier 39 Sea Lions?

The number of sea lions at Pier 39 fluctuates throughout the year. During the winter months, the population can swell to several hundred, and occasionally over a thousand. In May 2024, a record-breaking number of over 1,700 sea lions were counted on the docks!

However, if you visit in June or July, you might only see a handful. This is because most of the sea lions migrate south to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California for their annual breeding season. They typically begin returning to San Francisco in August.

Who is “Chonkers” the Sea Lion?

Chonkers is the nickname given to a very large male Steller sea lion seen at Pier 39 in 2026. He is a different species from the California sea lions that usually gather at K-Dock.

Unlike younger or smaller sea lions, Chonkers often stands out immediately. Chonkers became especially popular online after videos showed him loudly barking, pushing other sea lions aside, and confidently taking over sections of K-Dock. His oversized appearance and funny behavior turned him into a fan favorite.

PIER 39’s official account dates Chonkers’ first reported K-Dock sighting to March 13, 2026. The older spring prediction about his imminent departure is not current visitor information. Wild animals move freely, and his presence cannot be guaranteed.

Check PIER 39’s official Chonkers page and its live camera for recent activity. A large sea lion on the docks should not automatically be identified as Chonkers, and a visit does not guarantee seeing him.

In the video Chonkers is swaying his head (“thermoregulating”) to cool off.

Chonkers the Steller Sea Lion at Pier 39 in San Francisco! Eastern Steller Sea Lions such as Chonkers rarely wander into San Francisco Bay. They prefer the cold waters near Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. In the video Chonkers is swaying his head (“thermoregulating”) to cool off. Chonkers has been at Pier 39 since mid-March. Steller breeding season is mid-May-mid-July, so Chonkers will be leaving shortly for the Año Nuevo or Farallon Islands. He will have to fight other males for the chance to mate. Good luck Chonkers! You touched our lives. Check out my blogs Chonkers and Sea Lions blogs to learn more!
