Animal Welfare Board of India is a statutory advisory body that advises the government of India on animal welfare issues. Animal Welfare Board of India: History
The Animal Welfare Board of India was established in 1962 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Animal activist (and dancer/choreographer) Rukmini Devi Arundale was instrumental in the board’s creation, and served as its first chairperson. The board’s mandate is to prevent the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals.

There is no Animal Control organization in India, so animal rescues are run and financed by volunteers. The Animal Welfare Board provides grants to recognized animal welfare organizations that submit applications.
