Factory Farming In India

India has more vegetarians than any country in the world. 39% of the population are vegetarians, and 81% limit meat in their diet. However, that is changing. In recent years there has been a surge in animal product consumption in India.

Sadly, this has resulted in exploitative factory farming practices, including isolation and poor living conditions for farmed animals. There is a lack of regulation of factory farming malpractices in India. Therefore, the welfare and protection of the rights of farmed animals is a high priority for FIAPO.

FIAPO’s Animals in Captivity Campaign

Animals are forced to live in artificial, stressful, and even painful conditions for the sake of human entertainment. They are removed from their natural habitats and social structures. Constant and often difficult travel, poor standards of care, and endless cruelty is the life of circus animals, cetaceans in captivity, and bulls forced into barbaric sports.

FIAPO is lobbying, generating public opinion, raising awareness, and initiating direct action to fight for stronger laws to end the suffering and mistreatment of these animals. Check out their latest campaigns:

FIAPO’s Companion Animal Campaign

Millions of dogs live on the streets in India’s cities and villages. Unfortunately, they are often faced with disease, starvation and neglect. FIAPO has 2 campaigns for companion animals.

The Legal Companion Action Campaign seeks to fight against any inimical developments against street dogs by providing critical information to the courts. The Supreme Court of India is currently deciding the issue of whether culling of street dogs should be legal. FIAPO is part of the team defending the dogs.

FIAPO’s Rabies Free India Campaign

The Rabies Free India Campaign seeks to educate people to mitigate rabies and create a dog-bite free society Over 20,000 people die from rabies in India every year; mostly from dog bites. Combined with misinformation and lack of animal birth control, this has led to irrational fear and violence against companion animals.

FIAPO works with state governments and local organizations to promote Rabies Free India. The campaign includes anti-rabies vaccinations, animal birth control, post-bite counselling, and dog bite prevention education.

FIAPO’s Animal Rights Movement Building

Despite a long-standing history of animal welfare and compassion towards animals, isolation and disconnection have become major concerns in the India animal rights movement. Even with local organizations and individuals working for the cause each day, local activists and NGOs often miss opportunities to participate in major events due to limited knowledge and/or poor communication.

Through FIAPO, the animal protection framework is being improved through collaborative and collective work, increasing people’s ability to be involved, and proper leadership development.

FIAPO’s Elephant Rights Campaign

Elephants in both captivity and the wild suffer at the hands of humans. There are 2,675 captive elephants in India. Many owners are struggling to feed the elephants due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.

FIAPO works to support the humane surrender and rehabilitation of captive elephants. They work to ban the ‘ownership’ of elephants, limit the use of elephants in entertainment, and resolve animal-human conflicts.

FIAPO Capacity Building and Training

  • FIAPO organizes workshops, seminars, webinars, and training programs to empower animal activists, volunteers, and organizations.
  • These capacity-building initiatives enhance skills and knowledge in areas such as rescue and rehabilitation, advocacy, and cruelty investigations.
