History Of PFA Agra

Mrs. Surat Prasad and her family set up PFA Agra in 1998. It has expanded in size and scope ever since. Mrs. Surat’s daughter, Richa, made her realize that someone needed to become the voice for the voiceless. It became evident to them that animals need someone to advocate for their rights and that what humans do for them is not a favor but a responsibility.

Richa reached out to Mrs. Maneka Gandhi, the Chairman of PFA, and PFA Agra was immediately registered in Mrs. Surat’s name. Mrs. Gandhi also sent them a list of PFA members who were already a part of the noble work and would help set up their unit.

In 2001, PFA Agra leased a 2-acre land. With grants from the government, they could construct a hospital and shelter for the strays of Agra.

PFA Agra Mission

PFA Agra’s mission is to help the strays of Agra. The organization aims to assist every stray in need. They manage initiatives for the rescue and treatment of sick, injured, and abandoned animals.

PFA Agra also runs a rescue helpline, conducts ABC programs, and provides shelter for homeless animals. Their rescue helpline runs from 8:00am – 6:00pm. Unfortunately, due to inadequate volunteers and insufficient funds, there is no one to attend calls after 6:00pm in the evening.

Shelter And Hospital

In 2003, they completed the hospital construction on the 2-acre site. It has separate wards for various animals. It also has an ICU for very sick animals and animals with infectious diseases.

Since its completion, the shelter-cum-hospital has been a home for disabled and abandoned animals. It has conducted many surgeries to treat rescued and outpatient animals and more than 3,000 sterilization operations on stray animals.

The 8,000-square-foot facility is divided into the following wards:

– Operating room

– Clinic and administrative area

– Large animal shed for incapacitated cattle

– Large animal shed for healthy cattle

– Small animal shed that includes one cat ward, two wards for accident victims, and one ward for blind dogs

– OPD (Outpatient Department)

– Isolation ward for dogs with Parvo

– ABC ward

– Isolation ward for large animals

– Two wards for paralyzed dogs

– Isolation ward for rabid dogs

– Quarters for staff and guest rooms

The ABC Program

The ABC or Animal Birth Control Program is PFA’s initiative to address the expanding stray dog population problem. They sterilize dogs to resolve the problem and save them from cruel elimination.

This will decrease the stray population over time. PFA Agra carries out every single ABC operation in an organized and systematic manner.

The process from start to finish is described below:

– PFA Agra identified a colony facing the issue of overpopulation.

– They seek volunteers and members.

– They capture the dogs and transport them from the colony to the facility.

– They sterilize the dogs.

– Post operation, they retain the dogs at the hospital for observation and care

– Once the dogs recover, PFA Agra returns them to the colony they picked them up from.
